Boosting Crop Productivity with NPKS (Balanced Fertilizer): Benefits for Farmers and Nation

Bangladesh is working to increase crop yields while protecting soil health. Balanced fertilizer use is
becoming more important for this goal. For many years, heavy use of urea and other single-nutrient
fertilizers boosted production in the short term. However, it also caused nutrient imbalance and soil
degradation. NPKS fertilizer offers a practical solution to this growing problem.
NPKS contains four essential nutrients—nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and sulphur—in one product.
This balanced composition supports healthy plant growth from root to harvest. Crops receive nutrients
evenly across the field, which improves consistency and reduces nutrient loss.
For farmers, the benefits are clear. Balanced nutrition leads to stronger roots, better tillering, and
improved grain filling. In rice cultivation, using NPKS can increase yields by 5–6 percent per hectare
compared to traditional fertilizers. Even a small yield increase can make a big difference for smallholder
farmers. NPKS also helps reduce costs. Farmers no longer need to carry and apply several different
fertilizers. One product replaces multiple bags, saving time, labor, and costs. Studies show that using NPKS
for rice can save around Tk 1,650 per hectare while delivering better output.
Soil health is another key advantage. Many
soils in Bangladesh now lack sulphur, which
reduces the effectiveness of other
nutrients. NPKS supplies sulphur and
improves nutrient uptake. Healthier soils
also help crops grow better with climate
stress such as drought, excess rain, and
temperature swings.
At the national level, NPKS supports more
efficient fertilizer use. It can serve as an
alternative when supplies of urea,
TSP/DAP, and MOP are delayed or limited.
Demand for NPKS is rising fast, with
current use estimated at 80,000 metric
tons and growing steadily at about 30
percent each year. Its success across rice, vegetable, rabi crops & Orchards highlights its broader value.
Balanced fertilizers like NPKS are not just about higher yields. They help farmers cut costs, protect the soil,
and farm more efficiently. In the long run, this approach supports stronger farm incomes and a more
secure food system for Bangladesh
